The Real Reason More Photographers Can’t Break Into The Destination Market

The forecast calls for two feet of snow. You’ve been stuck inside because of snow and cold for weeks with no end in sight. Instead of snow, wouldn’t sand and beaches be a refreshing change right about now?

Many photographers feel that way, and happily include one little sentence on their websites:

“Work in and around [insert your
hometown here] or will travel to your destination.”

Then they sit back and wait for the phone to ring, making the offer of a lifetime to travel to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Fiji, Greece, – okay, you get the picture.

The trouble is that phone call never comes for most. It never comes because the last thing a bride ever goes on the hunt for is for a photographer that “will travel to your destination”.

Instead, if a bride is getting married in Antigua, she searches for a “wedding photographer in Antigua”. If she’s getting married in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, she searches for a “wedding photographer in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.”

And so the two never meet.

Creating The Plan
Let’s say you are a wedding photographer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In order to photograph weddings, you probably do a variety of things to advertise your business:

  • Put an ad in the local bridal guide
  • Attend a bridal show
  • Connect with reception sites
  • Join a wedding related association
  • Send out postcards to recently engaged couples
  • Place flyers in a bridal salon

And so the weddings start coming in. Now let me ask you a question. What if you did the same thing for your choice destination locations?

If you’ve ever looked over the many publications for weddings, you know there are several exclusively for the destination wedding business. If you’ve never bought one, run to your nearest bookstore and buy one. Better, yet, every one they have.

Yes, you can advertise in these magazines – if a bride from Minneapolis is planning on getting married in Fiji, chances are she’ll have purchased at least one of these magazines.

But you can also use it as a resource for finding things that will help you go where you want to go.

If you want to travel to Antigua, what reception sites are big there? Are there any wedding coordinators that work there regularly?

Now start marketing in the same manner you do for your local town. Advertise on websites. Participate in social networking sites that are focused around your areas of choice.

The difference is you’ve now come up on the radar for things a bride is actually searching for.

And you have a much better chance of being recognized. And escaping from the snow for a few days.
